In art school, Richard wasn’t thinking much about making a living from gallery shows – in other words, the way he does now. He would go to bars and sit and drink and make 5”x7” ballpoint pen drawings, but wasn’t necessarily thinking that they’d be something to show. As he puts it, “I didn’t start thinking about making paintings for shows until I started doing paintings for shows.” What Rich did have were several artist friends, courtesy of that graffiti past, who championed his work and pushed him to produce new pieces for shows they were organizing. His first show came in 2001, in conjunction with his inclusion in Free Agents: A History of Washington, D.C. Graffiti. The following year, he was the junior member in a group show at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles, alongside Ron English, Shepard Fairey, and Dalek. He followed with solo shows at Merry’s in recent years, as well as a host of other group and solo affairs.
